Anna Dean

Author of the Dido Kent mysteries

Biography

Anna Dean is the pen-name I have chosen for the Dido Kent series of books. My real name is Marian Veevers (under which I have other published work).

It feels as if I've been writing for ever. I write because I like stories; because I like slipping away into imaginary worlds; because I enjoy the way that words fit together, the way they look on the page, the way they sound in my head. I write because I'm utterly miserable if I don't.

I live in a small village in the English Lake District with a wonderful husband who is very understanding about my writing habit. I also share my home with a cat who is a great deal less tolerant. I love the countryside, old houses, old letters, word puzzles, and the literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is a combination of all these interests which resulted in the writing of the Dido Kent Mystery series. I also enjoy walking, canoeing on flat water, afternoon tea and talking with friends.

My favourite books include: Emma by Jane Austen, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Precious Bane by Mary Webb. Some of my favourite films are Remains of the Day, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Gosford Park, Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado about Nothing  and Galaxy Quest.
